Bellplain Lakeland Terriers

Bart DeSilva
Chicago, Illinois USA

Hi everyone.  My name is Bart DeSilva.  My devotion to the sport of purebred dogs and AKC Conformation began in 1976 when I attended my first dog show, the Heart of America Kennel Club, in Kansas City, MO., and there I met various Standard Poodle breeders.  Soon afterwards, I leased a Standard Poodle female and began showing.  My first AKC Champion was a blue Standard Poodle named Ch. Remm's Rexton of Blakewood, which I purchased from Margaret Mitchell.  This dog I finished completely owner handled, which was no small feat because, at the time, nearly every Poodle was shown by a professional handler.

From there I showed and bred Standard Poodles, Maltese, and Miniature Poodles off and on until 2003.  In 2003, I took a break from showing and breeding dogs so I could get a college degree.
So then in 2019, following the loss of a beloved pet Yorkie, I began looking for another show dog.  I did lots of research on websites, attending dog shows, etc., until I decided I would like to have a Lakeland Terrier.
The Lakeland Terrier is the best-kept secret in the dog world.  They are a rare breed despite being beautiful, just the right size for many people and with great temperaments.  They are happy, playful, brave for their size and they have that prey drive that many terrier breeds have.  They are not as dog-aggressive as some of the other terrier breeds can be.  So I decided they are the perfect dog for me.
So in my research, Sara Peterka of Glacieridge came highly recommended by her peers.  I began talking with her about getting my first Lakeland Terrier from her.  Sara is past president of the national breed club, the USLTC>  she is a very successful, conscientious breeder.  In time, she became a great mentor to me as I had a lot to learn about Lakelands and terriers in general.  She has been a great help.  In fact, she built majors at several shows so that I could finish my first Lakeland.  So on November 9, 2019, I brought home a lovely red Lakeland Terrier female I named Jamie Lee.  I practiced grooming her (I was not very good) and I trained her for another 8 months and then she was sent to professional handler, Allison Sunderman.  Allison took Jamie Lee to only eight shows.  She finished with four majors, including a 5-point major.  She was also Best of Breed twice, including at the prestigious Terrier Club of Michigan.  So she is now Ch. Glacieridge Strictly Superstition.  My plan is for her tobecome my foundation bitch and to produce a few champions for me under the Bellplain banner.
If you would like to learn more about the Lakeland Terrier, you can visit the national breed club website at USLTC.org or visit AKC.org
